Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

Have you ever felt like giving up even though you absolutely love the sport and what you do?

Have you experienced fatigue, frustration, and feeling defeated because you just can’t figure out how to overcome or reach that next level?

In today’s episode, we dive into where energy comes from and why it’s critical that we look at the GI tract and the Mitochondria when it comes to health AND sports performance.

Research has just barely scratched the surface
looking into how the two major performance factors work together and today we’re covering a small portion of it as it relates to athletic performance. In this episode, we also talk about different aspects of your mindset and neurology
that can hold you back from really achieving your goal (whether that’s in health, performance, or both).

Why is strength training so important for runners? https://drkirstin.com/why-is-strength-training-so-important-for-runners/ Sat, 14 May 2022 09:00:11 +0000 https://drkirstin.com/?p=23794

Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

Strength is resiliency, stability and power. It’s all the things that you need to get through your stride. And if we think  about the biochemical forces in our body, with running, they are huge. We can build some strength through running, the cardiovascular gains tend to happen faster than our muscular fitness gains.

Strength training can help capitalize those cardiovascular gains faster, like help that lagging end of the system build up so that you can get more out of all the gains you are making with your running program and progressing your mileage there and push it along with the strength training.

“More running doesn’t always mean better running.”

Improve your speed by hitting the weights. Strength training is an essential supplement to a runner’s roadwork because it strengthens muscles and joints, which can improve race times and decrease injury risk. If you want to perform at your full potential, you need to take a comprehensive approach to running.

Tune in to learn why strength training is important to runners and what Allison and I think about it.

She doesn’t just focus on postpartum she really is centered and focused on helping runners be able to run very well and she does that through strength training. She is also a certified personal trainer  and running coach and also a pregnancy postpartum corrective exercise specialist.

In addition, to her fitness, expertise and experience. Allison, holds a doctorate in Chemical Engineering, from Georgia Tech. She has taught everything from sixth grade science to collegiate level engineering courses. And her efficient scientific approach and passion for education helped her to break complex ideas down into the simplest form of what actually works and in a way that you are actually going to do it.

Allison has been featured in a variety of media outlets including FitFluential, Not Your Typical Mom Podcast, The Life Boss Podcast, Runner Mom’s Podcast and Shape Magazine.

Allison started running with her mom when she was 9 or 10 years old with her mom’s group of friends. She would go with them as her “mom” time. Was able to do running races with her and continued until highschool.

How to improve your golf swing and game without “hitting more balls” https://drkirstin.com/how-to-improve-your-golf-swing-and-game-without-hitting-more-balls/ Sat, 07 May 2022 09:00:39 +0000 https://drkirstin.com/?p=23776

Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

It’s really common for any athlete to want to work on technique and do MORE to improve.

Forexample, hit more golf balls, play more games of golf, work on technique, change equipment, get fancy data from improving technology etc.

But did you know that you can capitalize on that
training you are already doing to see improvements in your performance (like bigger back swing, distance, feeling strong to the end of the game) that has “virtually nothing” to do with skills?

In this episode we discuss how you can improve pain, aches, fatigue and your performance overall by addressing a few key factors that many athletes, including golfers, tend to neglect or miss.

Tune in to learn what those are and make sure to catch why Dr Joe and I aren’t big fans of hydration drinks like gatorade.

Training Without A Specific Strength Program Is The Worst Way To Prevent ACL Tears In Female Athletes https://drkirstin.com/training-without-a-specific-strength-program-is-the-worst-way-to-prevent-acl-tears-in-female-athletes/ Sat, 30 Apr 2022 09:00:22 +0000 https://drkirstin.com/?p=23766

Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

Did you know there are a few non-contact injuries that are more prevalent in female athletes?

Some of these include ACL tears in the knee and concussions. There are a few reasons why
this happens, but one of the main reasons is because the reality is that most female athletes
don’t get access to strength training early enough in their life and sport.

Today Dr Melissa MacDonald joins me on the podcast and we dive into several reasons why these injuries occur more often with female athletes and, most importantly, ways you can work to prevent them.

Dr Melissa MacDonald’s Bio and Links:

Dr Mac can be found here https://linktr.ee/macp_clinic

Dr. Melissa MacDonald is a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University where she earned her Doctor of Chiropractic. She then spent two years of specialty training in the Human Performance Center where she focused her research and clinical skills on specific testing and treatment protocols.

Additionally, Dr. Mac is the team chiropractor for MN Roller Derby, River City Rhythms a drum corp international, and the MN Vixen a professional woman’s football team.

Dr. Mac has achieved both international and national certification as a chiropractic sport
provider. She is a faculty member at Northwestern Health Sciences University where she teaches Emergency Procedures.

She is a speaker on sports chiropractic issues and health & wellness in the United States as well as abroad. Now she hosts the MAC Performance podcast the health & wellness podcast that will whiplash you into health.

Achieving Peak Athletic Performance Is An Inflammatory Endeavor https://drkirstin.com/achieving-peak-athletic-performance-is-an-inflammatory-endeavor/ Wed, 20 Apr 2022 00:11:59 +0000 https://drkirstin.com/?p=23750

Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

A very common misconception around sports is that athletes are at their peak health of their life
when they’re also achieving peak performance.

We know from many studies and tests that
when athletes are at their peak, they are often also the most nutrient deficient and inflamed.

This is just one reason why completely preventable injuries and illnesses are prevalent the deeper into the season they get.

In this episode we cover the most common drivers of chronic inflammation in athletes, some of which might surprise you.

The first step is awareness and then I cover what steps you can take to minimize inflammation, drivers of chronic inflammation, and how to support your body through training and competition season to reduce your risk of injury and illness.

Also, coming up soon! Get registered to join us for free at the Elevate Your Sports Performance
Online Workshop on April 22nd by going to drkirstin.com/elevate. See you there!

I just can’t figure out this fatigue during workouts https://drkirstin.com/i-just-cant-figure-out-this-fatigue-during-workouts/ Tue, 19 Apr 2022 23:58:58 +0000 https://drkirstin.com/?p=23744

Heyyy! Welcome to the Dr K Show and the Fit and Healthy Athlete Podcast!

Have you ever struggled with sports nutrition during training or events? Or have you been
struggling with fatigue daily or have noticed that your energy just isn’t the same during workouts
as it has been in the past?

If you’re like many athletes I work with, you’re probably training 10+ hours a week and you might be taking a few supplements, trying to eat enough in your day because you know you need to, but you still are experiencing low energy in your workouts over the last 3 months, and no matter what you try you’re still not getting better.

In this episode we cover:

– How you can dial in your nutrition and fueling to leave frustrations with the “4th discipline” in the past

– What specific patterns to become aware of around fueling and nutrition, which will help you create a strategy to overcome them

– How to combine both health AND performance, especially if you have heard, or ever thought that peak performance comes at a sacrifice to your health

– And if you can’t find time to work on your nutrition or health, maybe we just need to look at this with a different perspective

If you’d like to grab the free guide I mentioned on how to build a foundation for a healthy body and peak performance, head to drkirstin.com/finishstrong.

In the guide, we cover the pillars to creating that foundation including: gut health, inflammation,
micronutrient deficiencies and more. The first step to improving is awareness and you can start that today.
